“Dental prophylaxis” is a cleaning procedure that thoroughly cleans your teeth to get rid of plaque build-up that regular brushing and flossing can’t reach. Even the most diligent home oral health regime needs the help of regular professional dental cleaning to keep your teeth free of decay and stop the progression of gum disease.
What is Plaque?
Only professional cleanings can remove plaque, a sticky invisible film that contains millions of bacteria. This growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva produce toxins that inflame the gums and promote tooth decay. Gum inflammation or “gingivitis” is the start of periodontal disease. If left untreated, it can develop into a more serious condition called periodontitis. As well, when plaque is left to build up, it hardens turning into tartar. Tartar sticks to your teeth allowing decay to set in which leads to
cavities.
What is Tartar?
Tartar and calculus form above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special cleanings called scaling. We use special dental instruments designed to gently remove tartar build-up before it can cause serious gum, teeth and bone problems.
How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?
Most of our patients require a professional dental cleaning twice a year as part of their preventative care. However, if you have signs of gum disease, we recommend you have cleanings every three to four months to help avoid progression that can lead to serious complications — including tooth loss. Once periodontitis sets in, it cannot be completely reversed. However, with an effective cleaning plan, we can help put a stop to the damaging effects of gum disease and end its progression.

Your Cleaning Appointments
At your cleaning, you will receive scaling to remove plaque and tartar, and your teeth will be polished to remove stains that cannot be removed with regular brushing.
Dr. Julie will also perform a comprehensive exam including:
- Disease Screening: Your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and gums will be checked for any signs of abnormal conditions, including cancer.
- Periodontal Evaluation: Your doctor will look for bleeding, swelling, redness of the gums, and bad breath to ensure your periodontal health.
- Examination of The Teeth: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay, as well as the condition of any restorative work, like fillings and crowns. X-rays will also be taken to look for signs of further issues. Changes are recorded, and your treatment plan will be updated as required.
