If you are looking for a smile makeover, Milltown Dental offers porcelain veneers as an excellent option to hide a number of smile imperfections. Veneers are an affordable and natural looking cosmetic
dental treatment that will enhance your overall smile making you feel younger, and more confident.
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are permanently bonded onto the front surface of teeth. They are one of the most appealing cosmetic options as they can help hide a wide variety of smile challenges from severe staining to gaps. Because they are made of porcelain they capture and reflect light in a very natural way and will also not stain over time.
How are veneers applied?
The procedure generally takes two dental visits, approximately two weeks apart. The first visit is the preparation of the teeth and the second visit is the cementation of the porcelain veneers. Dental veneers are individually made in a lab and matched to the colour of your existing natural teeth for a smooth, even appearance.
In order to apply porcelain veneers, we will remove a thin layer of your enamel to prepare the tooth and allow your veneer to fit comfortably over your natural tooth. Once the filing is complete, we take impressions of your teeth which are sent to the dental lab where your veneers will be crafted. Temporary veneers will be inserted to protect your teeth while your veneers are being made. You will have to be careful biting and chewing as your temporary veneers are very fragile.
Once your veneers are ready you will return to our office where we will remove your temporary veneers. We will apply a mild chemical to your teeth which will help to roughen them in preparation for the adhesive used to cement your veneers in place. We will then cement the veneers to your teeth using a strong composite resin.
When are veneers recommended?
Veneers serve many purposes and can be used to:
- Straighten crooked teeth
- Close gaps in teeth
- Whiten dark, yellow, permanently stained or discoloured teeth
- Repair broken or chipped teeth
When are veneers not suitable?
Veneers are not suitable for people who tend to grind their teeth, clench or even those who might bite their nails or chew on ice. This can damage your veneers leaving them chipped and cracked.
